Nagasubramanian Chokkanathan, who writes as N. Chokkan, is a well known author amongst Tamil readers. His ability to write clear prose backed by thorough research has earned him his sustained popularity over the past two decades.

Chokkan has authored more than 70 books across genres that span fiction, biographies, company histories, self-help, and children’s literature. Over the years, Chokkan has also published hundreds of short stories and columns in popular Tamil publications.

Born in 1978 and raised in Attur, Salem, Tamil Nadu, Chokkan graduated as an engineer and currently works in Bengaluru as a software professional.

The literary bug bit Chokkan in his schooldays, and he honed his skills by writing short fiction. His first short story was published in 1997. Prolific ever since, Chokkan has published his works in almost all of Tamil Nadu’s premier periodicals.

In 2003, Chokkan’s first short story anthology, ‘Oru Pachai Parker Penaa’ (A green Parker pen) was published. In a foreword to the book, acclaimed Tamil writer Era. Murukan praised Chokkan’s mastery in depicting the many hassles and disappointments, and the agonies and ecstacies of work relationships in urban sprawls, handled with oodles of empathy and kindness. In the same year, Chokkan authored his first non-fiction book, a biography of cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar, one of the first in Tamil.

In 2004, Chokkan’s biography of Dhirubhai Ambani, titled ‘Ambani: Oru Vetri Kadhai’ (Ambani: A success story) attained instant popularity, and became a bestseller. Its success led him to write more such biographies and company histories. Chokkan’s works have now proven that there is indeed a good market for popular history books in Tamil if the content is delivered with sincerety, backed by copious references gathered through extensive research.

While Chokkan also writes books in English, many of his works have been translated into various Indian languages including Hindi, Kannada, and Malayalam.
